There are many common misconceptions about terms like:
GIA papers, GIA certificates and GIA gemologist appraisals.
An official GIA gemstone certificate is document that certifies the identification and quality (color, clarity and some cut details) about a loose (unset) gemstone. There is, and never has been, a value assigned on any official GIA certificate. If you have a colored diamond or colored gemstone certificate it will not only include the identification of the gem but it will indicate if the color is natural or a result of treatment and if treated what treatment was implemented.
A GIA gemologist appraisal is an appraisal issued by a gemologist trained by the G.I.A. (Gemologist Institute of America). As with any institute or academy there are adept graduates and there are mediocre graduates but GIA remains the premier gemstone institution and is world renown. Terms like: Diamond Expert, Diamondologist, Master Diamondeer, Master Jeweler, Certified Diamond Buyer and the like have no affiliation to GIA or any actual institution and in reality are self claimed titles. At GIA Diamond Buyer the owner is an actual resident graduate gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
